About the Trek
Gomukh Tapovan trek is not just a trek, it is a journey. It is a journey not only for its sacredness and travel through the holy land filled with stories on every corner, but also because it is the source of Ganga- the ferocious river which is on a 2700km long journey of its own to nourish an entire nation with its raw power and sacred energy. Gomukh is regarded as the mouth of this powerful river and the place where it starts its all-encompassing voyage. Tapovan has a significance of its own. With the magnetic energy of the place at the foot of some of the most reverential and indomitable mountains of the Garhwal range, each of which hold a special place in our age-old mythology, remains a place of choice for the spiritual yogis to go into long-term meditation despite the harsh conditions of the altitude. It also forms the base camp for some of the most difficult climbs in Garhwal Range of Himalayas like Mt. Shivling and Mt. Kedar Dome.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
A 6-day journey from Gangotri.
- Early morning departure for Gangotri via Rishikesh and Uttarkashi, driving along the Bhagirathi River through deep valleys and forested mountain roads. Multiple short breaks are taken en route. Upon arrival at Gangotri, check-in at guesthouse or camp. Evening is reserved for acclimatization, briefing, and optional visit to the Gangotri Temple . Dinner and overnight stay at Gangotri
- After breakfast, the trek begins inside Gangotri National Park . The trail follows a well-maintained path along the Bhagirathi River, gradually ascending through chir pine, deodar, and birch forests. After approximately 9 km, the route reaches Chirbasa , where the forest line ends and the landscape opens into a broad glacial valley. From Chirbasa onward, the terrain becomes rocky and exposed, with strong winds and expansive views of the Bhagirathi peaks. The final stretch follows the riverbed to Bhojbasa , the last permanent settlement before Gaumukh. Evening is dedicated to rest and acclimatization. Overnight stay at Bhojbasa
- An early start is mandatory. The trail leads first to Gaumukh , the snout of the Gangotri Glacier and the sacred origin of the River Ganga. After a short halt, the trek turns sharply upward toward Tapovan. The ascent to Tapovan involves steep climbing over loose moraines and rocky slopes , demanding careful footing, stamina, and prior high-altitude trekking experience. This is the most physically challenging day of the trek. Upon reaching Tapovan (4,460 m) , trekkers are rewarded with panoramic alpine meadows and close-up views of Mt. Shivling , Meru , and the Bhagirathi massif . Overnight camping at Tapovan
- After breakfast, the descent begins carefully over the moraine route back toward Gaumukh. Extra caution is required due to loose rocks and shifting terrain. After crossing Gaumukh, the trail continues along the Bhagirathi River back to Bhojbasa. Evening is spent resting and preparing for the final descent. Overnight stay at Bhojbasa
- The final day involves a long but comfortable descent from Bhojbasa to Gangotri via Chirbasa. On arrival at Gangotri, stay in Gangotri
- The day is a long drive back to Dehradun. Expect to reach Dehradun by early evening and plan your journey ahead accordingly

This is a Moderate grade trek. You'll be walking 5–8 hours on some days, often at altitudes above 3,500 m. Prior trekking experience is not mandatory but a solid 4–6 weeks of preparation will make a real difference.
Cardio — Start 4–6 Weeks Before

- Brisk walks: 8–10 km weekend walks with a 5–8 kg daypack
- Stairs: 10–12 floors daily, or use a stair machine at the gym

Diet & Hydration
- 3–4 litres of water daily throughout your training period
- High-protein meals (eggs, dal, paneer, chicken) for muscle recovery
- Complex carbs (oats, brown rice, sweet potato) for sustained energy
- Cut alcohol completely 1 week before departure
- Carry electrolyte sachets and glucose powder for the trail
Altitude Awareness
- Moderate treks often cross 3,500–4,200 m — AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is a real risk
- Walk slowly, breathe deeply, and hydrate constantly above 3,000 m
- Know the symptoms: headache, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness
- Inform your trek leader immediately if you feel unwell — never push through altitude symptoms
- Consult your doctor about Diamox if you have a history of altitude sensitivity
